Love Letters is a moving portrayal of a relationship that grows and deepens through letters. We see Andrew Makepeace Ladd 3d and Melissa Gardner over a period of 50 years as the author carries them from second grade through the trials of adulthood, marriage, divorce and middle age. The most poignant element of Gurney's piece is the story between the lines, the words Andy and especially Melissa cannot bring themselves to write.
Though the play is in the form of a staged reading, critics have consistently proclaimed that something dramatic occurs as the two characters connect in a way they might not in a fully staged production, and as the audience’s imagination is added to the mix. As opposites, each character provides the other with what is needed. The irony is that they do not understand this until late in life. These are, in fact, star-crossed love letters.
One reviewer has said, “Love Letters is not only about acting. It's also about listening... but in a different way.”
